January 9, 1957 Council is advised that Local 411 has appointed a three man bargaining committee and intends to bargain.

The Fire Chief is advised that some men have faulty rubber clothing.

February 3, 1957 Bargaining proposals are endorsed by the membership including:

  • an extra pair of pants with uniform allotment in alternating years.
  • an extra week holidays at 25 years and thereafter
  • hospitalization up to 50%
  • a captain on every vehicle
  • contract to expire Dec. 31, 1957
  • a doctor for the men
  • 40-hour work week on the two platoon system

$100.00 is donated to Camp Maple Leaf

Membership requests that a filing system be provided for trucks showing dangers of factories in the Township.

$75.00 is donated to the Redfern Grill for services rendered at the Argo Roofing fire.

Members defeat a motion asking for the repeal of the 1937 by-law preventing fire fighters from working off shift.

A widows and orphans pension of $60.00 per week is approved as a bargaining proposal.

The President loses a vote of confidence.

April 3, 1957 A resolution to be sent to the PFOFF requesting a change to the Municipal Act to allow for full payout of accumulated sick time is drafted.

Members request that when a contract offer is received from Council, that a secret ballot be held for ratification.

Members suggest that Local 411 write to the PFOFF to get information on forming one local from the metropolitan area.

May 1, 1957 40% of the dance profit is earmarked to the Welfare Corporation.

Plans to attend the Labour Day Parade, and to secure a truck are approved.

June, 1957 Local 411 sends a delegation to the PFOFF Convention in Sudbury.

June 26, 1957 Council's contract offer is rejected by secret ballot.

July 4, 1957 Council's final offer is accepted by the membership by secret ballot.

September 4, 1957 1st Vice President Ed Robinson swears in the Executive Board.

October 2, 1957 Channel 17 conversion kits are approved for the 3 halls.

Local 411 withdraws from the Credit Union so that another person can join.

Members reject a motion to approach the Chief about allowing pool tables to be place in the stations.

November 6, 1957 A motion is passed that Local 411: "does not approve of the Firemen doing mechanical maintenance on the apparatus (greasing and oil changes)."

The Executive reports on the availability of free blood from the Red Cross.

December 4, 1957 A $150.00 donation to the Salvation Army Training Citadel, and $50.00 donation to the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of Toronto are unanimously approved by the membership.

Local 411 replaces a coffee urn from Cameron's Grill that is damaged in the Silverthorn School fire.

January 8, 1958 Contract proposals are approved by the membership:

  • 1st class salary of $4700.00
  • 42 hour work week on the two platoon system
  • retirement at 60 with 30 years service
  • group insurance on a 50-50 basis

February 5, 1958 Donald Wood, Reginald McPhadden initiated into Local 411.

An Honourary Membership is given to A. D. DesRoches.

March 5, 1958 G. Robinson initiated into Local 411.

Local 411 votes to oppose a Canadian Association of Fire Fighters.

March 18, 1958 A special meeting is held approve Council's 1958 contract offer. The offer is accepted unanimously. The night meeting lasts five and a half minutes, the shortest on record.

April 2, 1958 A new TV is purchased for the switchboard room.

The Executive Board is authorized to appear before the Chief without the approval of the general body.

Russell Jones is initiated into Local 411.

$25.00 is donated to the Ontario Society for Crippled Children, $100.00 to the St. Paul's Cerebral Palsy Parent Council and $250.00 towards a hockey banquet.

May 7, 1958 Members unanimously vote to work for Brother T. Alexander.

65% of dance profits are earmarked for the Welfare Corporation.

A childrens' Christmas Tree is approved.

June 4, 1958 Election of Officers: President: T. Todd, Vice-President: N. Munro, Executive Board: L. Logie, J. Robinson, Secretary-Treasurer: A. Durling. $55.00 is donated to send one boy to the Scout Jamboree.

Delegates attend the PFOFF Convention in Niagara Falls.

September, 1958. Members march in the Labour Day Parade. Brother Thomas Alexander dies.

September 3, 1958 A delegate is sent to the Ontario Congress of Labour Convention in Toronto.

An Executive Member attends a labour relations seminar at Gravenhurst.

Thomas H. Thompson is initiated into Local 411.

October 27, 1958 $25.00 is donated to the John Redmond Memorial Fund.

Members request the Chief to provide a coat for winter wear for members of the Ambulance Car 8.

$200.00 is donated to the hockey team.

Ping pong tables and dart boards are provided for each station.

November 19, 1958 Special meeting held to discuss contract proposals:
  • 42 hour work week on 2 platoon system
  • 100% hospitalization (50% hospital, 50% surgical)
  • one extra pair of pants for first uniform issue.

  • retirement with no penalty after thirty years
  • $300.00 increase for all members

December 3, 1958 Members approve that ill members be sent a carton of cigarettes, or fruit if they are sick for over seven days.

Pat Nagle is initiated into Local 411.

$200.00 is donated to the York Township School for Retarded Children.

December 19, 1958 A "Christmas Tree" is held at the Silverthorn Legion for the first time for spouses and children (under 14) of Local 411 members .

Members approve giving a $50.00 gift to any employee of the fire department celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary.

President Todd and Secretary-Treasurer Durling resign.

February 4, 1959 $10.00 is sent to the International Wood Workers.

Brothers Hoare and McNeely are presented with retirement cheques.

March 4, 1959 The Membership goes on record against the Local paying any money towards political campaigns.

A union notice board is approved for Mt. Dennis station.

Signs are posted in the stations to notify of monthly union meetings.

$100.00 is donated to the hockey team.

April 1, 1959 Members approve the Palace Pier for the 1960 Ball, after a successful 1959 Ball held there.

Dennis Cull is initiated into Local 411.

April 29, 1959 A special meeting is held to consider Council's 1959 contract offer: The proposal is accepted unanimously. Terms included:
  • two pairs of pants for a new mans uniform
  • 5% raise for all ranks
  • 48 hour week to be implemented March 1, 1960
  • 50% of surgical fees to be paid by the Township

June 10, 1959 Bill Robb, Gord Thatcher, Walter Drake, George Walford and Frank Taylor are initiated into Local 411.

Local 411 posts a notice requesting that any member wishing to take a St. John's Ambulance First Aid Course contact the Deputy Chief.

September, 1959 Local 411 marches in the Labour Day Parade.

September 9, 1959 Frank Ley, James Paul, Karl Lewis and John Long are initiated into Local 411.

Members ask to be allowed to change shifts without inspection "when their reliefs come in within a reasonable time (half hour)."

October 7, 1959 Two delegates sent to Gravenhurst for the 3rd Labour Relations Seminar.

Constitution changes:

  • Duties of Secretary and Treasurer are joined together in one paragraph entitled Secretary-Treasurer.
  • Convention delegates expenses are raised: Meals from $5.00 to $8.00 per day and Out-of-pocket from $5.00 to $10.00 per day.
  • Dues increase from $1.50 per month to $2.00 per month.
  • Members are required to have dues deducted by payroll deduction by January 1, 1960.
  • Assessments for deceased members are raised from $2.00 to $3.00 on January 1, 1960

One hundred and fifty printed constitutions are ordered.

November 2 - 4, 1959 One delegate is sent to the Ontario Federation of Labour Convention in Niagara Falls.

October 7, 1959 New radios are bought for Fairbank and Humbercrest halls. It is suggested that the old radios be raffled off by the hockey team, but they are kept as spares.

November 4, 1959 Don Hodges is sworn into Local 411.

Plans for members to march in the Armistice Day Parade, including the purchase of a wreath and refreshments, are approved.

Local 411 attempts to have pensions apply from members original date of hire (Presently, all pensions are calculated from 1945).

Executive members are required to sit at the head table at membership meetings.

December 1959 Local 411 holds a Christmas party at the Weston Sanatorium.

December 2, 1959 Twenty-five cents per member is sent to the Toronto Labour Health Centre Organization.

December 18, 1959 A "Christmas Tree" is held at the Silverthorn Legion for children of Local 411 members.

January 6, 1960 Local 411 pays for the toys for the childrens' Christmas Party, but thanks the Welfare Corporation for its offer to purchase them.

Local 411 purchases ash trays for all of the stations.

January 14, 1960 A special meeting is held to discuss the issue of pay days. A motion to: "accept one week's pay on January 22, 1960, and continue on our regular two weeks pay thereafter" is carried.

March 2, 1960 Local 411 purchases an ad in the North Bay Convention Book for $10.00.

March 31, 1960 The 27th Annual Ball is held at the Palace Pier.

May 11, 1960 A special meeting is held to discuss the merits of the Metro Pension Plan. Brother Eric Parks of the North York local addresses the members present.

June 1, 1960 W. Cook, McCullough, G. Hussey, C. Ralph, D. Gibson, E. Baxter, J. Donohoe, W. Barton, Langdon, J. Dunn, R. Bell, E. Schanck, D. Kerr, T. Hughes, R. Ludlow, J. Scott, T. Briggs, Matthews, B. Moir, and R. E. Nelson are sworn into Local 411.

$1200.00 of the dance proceeds earmarked for the Welfare Corporation.

Members vote to work for Brother F. Todd if necessary.

Members vote to "strive to get into the Metro [Pension] Plan with no loss of service."

$25.00 is donated to the Brotherhood of Painters.

The Benny Louis Orchestra is hired for the 1961 Ball at the Palace Pier.

June, 1960 Delegates attend the PFOFF Convention in North Bay

June 27, 1960 Jim Racicot is initiated into Local 411.

August, 1960 Two delegates attend for the IAFF convention in Buffalo.

August 23, 1960 A rank "higher than Captain" is created for the head of the Fire Prevention Department.

September 7, 1960 Wreaths are sent, and a dance is approved to raise at least $100.00 for each of the two widows of Scarborough Fire Fighters who died in a vehicle accident while responding to a call.

October 5, 1960 A notice is posted for anyone to sign who wants to purchase a Provincial Association button.

The Local approaches the Chief to ask if men can work for an officer out of sick credits, the officer to receive 1st class salary.

Chief is approached to see if men can give a lieu day to an officer whose sick credits have run out.

1961 Association contract proposals are tabled:

  • A 7% increase for the first year of the contract.
  • A 3% increase for the second year of the contract.
  • Holiday pay to be paid in advance on the last pay previous to holidays (as in previous years).
  • Delete the clause requiring old uniforms to be turned in.
  • Delete the clause pertaining to working off shift. (rejected by the membership)
  • Allow leave for four delegates to conventions (from four).
  • New men to be given a lieu day in their first year for every statutory holiday that falls in that period of employment.

November 28, 1960 A bargaining brief is drawn up, with the addition of a clause for 50-50 group insurance.

December, 1960 A Christmas party is held for the children in the Weston "San."

December 6, 1960 Members approve paying the bills pertaining to Brother Ludlow's funeral.

December 21, 1960 A "Christmas Tree" is held for members' children at the Silverthorn Legion. W. Kimber acts as "Santa."

December 24, 1960 Members deliver Star Boxes.

December 27, 1960 A special meeting is held to have Local 411 determine if the Township is paying salaries according to the terms of the collective agreement. Members unanimously support obtaining legal advice and the opinion of a chartered accountant on the issue, and write Council requesting that salaries be paid in accordance with the contract.

March 1, 1961 Robert Price in initiated into Local 411.

April 5, 1961 Members reject the Township's proposal to join a Voluntary Employee's Association for the purpose of bargaining.

A letter is sent to Council advising of the expiration of the contract, and Local 411's intent to bargain.

$12.00 is donated to the Association of Unemployed for their lobby in Ottawa.

A resolution that the Provincial take up the issue of having a qualified person with knowledge of fire department practices and techniques on Coroner's juries involving fire deaths is endorsed.

April 6, 1961 Annual Ball held at the Palace Pier. 5000 tickets are printed.

May 11, 1961 A special meeting is held to discuss a contract offer from Council. The offer is rejected.

May 18, 1961 A special meeting is held to discuss Council's final contract offer. Members vote to inform Council the offer is not acceptable, and of their intention to proceed to arbitration.

June, 1961 Two delegates attend the PFOFF Convention in Sault Ste. Marie.

July 25, 1961 Tom Pocock, George Sweetman, and Lowell Strain are sworn into Local 411.

September 6, 1961 $45.00 worth of tickets are purchased for the Rani-Ghar Grotto Show fund in aid of C.P. research.

October 4, 1961 $50.00 is sent to the Royal York Strike Fund of the Hotel Employee's Union.

November 6-8, 1961 Delegates attend the Ontario Federation of Labour Convention in Windsor.

November 11, 1961 Local 411 marches in the York Armistice Day Parade. Members accept Hydro's invitation for light refreshments after the parade, and contribute to the cost.

November 27, 1961 A special meeting is held to discuss the terms of the arbitration award.

The award includes:

  • Holiday pay received prior to the individual's holidays.
  • Leave for four delegates to conventions
  • Group insurance 50-50 with a $5000.00 death benefit
  • Increased 50-50 hospitalization plan, but no specific plan included in award
  • Term - until December 31, 1962
  • Across-the-board salary increase of $144.00 per member

December 6, 1961 Legal fees of $632.00 for lawyers, and $100.00 for the Association nominee are paid for the arbitration. A supplementary legal bill of $70.00 is paid later.

"Santa" Bill Kimber is given a box of 50 cigars for his work at the "Christmas Trees."

December 1961 "Christmas Trees" are held for the children at the Weston "San," and for the children of Local 411 members.

February 7, 1962 Members take issue when the Chief calls off-duty men in on emergency callback while one on-duty crew remains in the station.

A letter of protest is sent to Council and the Chief regarding the present method of promotion.

$25.00 is sent to the Royal York strikers, Local 299.

Norman Bruce Ferrier, Alan House, Robert Day, Fred Kelly, John Beattie, Jim Plender, Paul Davis, Ed Riley, Robert Thomas Alexander, Donald Dyson, Darrell Ellis and Norman Furber are initiated into Local 411.

March 7, 1962 Members vote to have Local 411 appear before council requesting that sufficient officers be appointed to have one an each vehicle at all times, or to pay senior men the prevailing rate to assume the responsibility.

April 4, 1962 Approval is given to send two representatives to the 7th Labour Relations Seminar at Gravenhurst.

Members approve providing the children at the Weston "San" with chocolate novelties for Easter.

May 2, 1962 $25.00 is sent to the Runnymede Hospital Comfort Fund.

Two shift dances are approved. Local 411 subsidizes $56.00 per member.

June 5-7, 1962 Local 411 sends four delegates to the PFOFF Convention in Kingston.

August 20, 1962 Local 411 sends two delegates to the IAFF Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

September, 1962 Local 411 participates in the Labour Day Parade.

A letter is sent to Council with an explanation with respect to a press report than ambulance drivers are using sirens for the fun of it.

$45.00 worth of tickets are purchased for the Rani-Ghar Grotto Show fund in aid of C.P. research.

September 13, 1962 A special meeting is held to consider a motion to have union meetings held outside of fire halls. The motion passes.

October 3, 1962 Union meetings moved to the Mount Dennis Community Centre on Hollis Street.

The following bargaining proposals are approved:

  • One year contract.
  • Ten percent salary increase across the board.
  • A forty-two hour work week based on the two platoon system.
  • A captain in charge of all vehicles.
  • A line of duty benefit for widows for full salary until she remarries.
  • Promotion system be amended: order of seniority, minimum ten years' service to qualify, a written exam (100%) and Officer's Report (100%). (This issue is held over, but is endorsed in November 1962)

    Local 411 clarifies what a member is to receive for initiation fees: first month's dues, IAFF pin and a 25 year IAFF pin after the completion of 25 years' service.

    A motion is passed giving preference for paid reliefs (union substitutions) to members who attend the previous meeting.

November 5-7, 1962 A delegate attends the OFL Convention in Niagara Falls.

November 7, 1962 Membership approves a "Christmas Tree" for members' children at Silverthorn Legion, the Weston "San," and marching and placing a wreath on Remembrance Day.

December 6,7, 1962. Local 411 sends a letter to Mr. Plante indicating an interest in a Canadian Union.

Two delegates from Local 411 attend a compensation seminar.

December 5, 1962 Fifty Provincial lapel pins are purchased by the Local to sell to interested members.

Local 411 asks Council to pay to print 5000 "antidote charts" to be delivered on home inspections.

December 24, 1962 Members deliver Star Boxes.

The Chief is approached to discuss the ambulance carrying patients with communicable diseases.

January 2, 1963 Brothers Ketteringham, Hall, Durling, Farr, Parson, Kimber, R. Brown, and R. Thompson are presented with 25 year pins.

Ron Kirk is initiated into Local 411.

Members seek clarification from the police department of the rules for the ambulance going through red lights and speeding.

February 4, 1963 Chief Clifford Rigby is made an Honourary Member of Local 411.

Post cards and windshield stickers are obtained from the OFL on the proposed Medicare plan.

February 8, 1963 A special meeting is held to consider a contract offer. The offer is accepted, and included:
  • One year agreement
  • 2% increase in salaries
  • 42 hour work week
  • Promotions for 8-9 captains.
  • Promotional exams conducted by the Fire Marshal with a 10% assessment by the Fire Chief.
  • Members wishing to write for promotion must be 1st class for 3 years.

March 6, 1963 Members vote to try to implement recommendations of an actuarial report on the York Pension Plan, and to obtain compulsory retirement age of 60.

Members pass a motion: "in the event of the amalgamation of the Fire Departments, Metro be zoned and a member could not be moved from zone to zone." The issue is further endorsed at a special meeting held on March 14, 1963.

April 3, 1963 Easter chocolates for children in the Weston "San" are approved

$25.00 is donated to the Reesor Siding Benefit Fund for the families of men shot to death.

Three books of draw tickets are purchased in aid of the Eastview Fire Fighters Association.

Local 411 takes up a grievance for members not receiving holiday pay in breach of the collective agreement.

Members vote to retain the 24 hour Sunday, and vote for a 4 day - 3 night - long shift rotation.

Members reject a request to test cars in the Township Safety Campaign.

Local 411 approaches the Chief "to establish a reference library from which training and examinations will be taken from."

Hill. Rooth and H. Todd receive 25 year pins.

A $150.00 annual honourarium is proposed for the President.

May 1, 1963 Two delegates are approved for the 9th Labour Relations Seminar.

$25.00 is donated to the Runnymede Hospital Comfort Fund.

Four members are reimbursed for expenses for attending the fire fighter's funeral in Montreal.

May 29, 1963 Ed Tarullo, Harry Mills and Don Bulger are initiated into Local 411.

Participation in the Labour Day Parade is approved.

$45.00 worth of tickets are purchased for the Rani-Ghar Grotto Show fund in aid of C.P. research.

The 1964 Ball is approved for the Club Kingsway.

June 4-6, 1963 Four delegates are sent to the PFOFF Convention in Oshawa.

September 4, 1963 Members endorse Local 411's offer to host a PFOFF District 1 meeting.

250 copies of the Constitution are ordered for $150.00.

Local 411 purchases two tickets for the Blind Artist Concert.

Proposals for the 1964 agreement are approved:

  • Delete the article prohibiting men from working off duty.
  • 15% salary increase.
  • City to pay 50% of medicare if a compulsory government plan comes into effect.
  • Increase in bereavement leave

October 15-18, 1963 Two consultants are sent to the Labour Relations Seminar at Gravenhurst.

November 4-6, 1963 Delegates attend the OFL Convention in Niagara Falls.

November 6, 1963 Douglas A. Nichols, Stuart Mantle, Harold Ellsworth, Stuart Ross, James Tomlin, David Easterbrook, Bernard Moyle, Paul Dargavel, Paul Poulton, Howard Smith, Rex Moore, Norm Gourley, Laurence Hayes, Lino Maniezzo, Colin Pherson, Victor Galata, Wilf Kennedy, John Aldis and David Anderson are sworn into Local 411.

Members approved the rank of Fire Inspector at $100.00 more a year than a 1st class fire fighter.

Members reject a contract proposal: "that a fire fighter's time when off duty be his own to do with as he sees fit."

December 4, 1963 A "Christmas Tree" is approved for the children in the Queen Mary Building of the Weston "San."

William Simpson is made an Honourary Member of Local 411.

$100.00 is donated to the "Christmas Tree" to be held in the stations for underprivileged children.

$25.00 is donated to the Building Services Employees International Union, Local 183, Trenton, strike fund.

January 8, 1964 Local 411 votes to support the Firefighter's Parade and demonstration show to be held at the CNE.

February 5, 1964 Local 411 requests that a bed be provided for the switchboard room. The request is denied.

March, 1964 Local 411 provides Easter treats to the children at the Weston "San."

March 31-April 3, 1964 Two consultants are sent to the 11th Labour Relations Seminar in Niagara Falls.

April 1, 1964 Members vote to include the Deputy Chief in the Association's Death Benefit Fund.

Members ask for a legal opinion on firefighters being ordered to turn out to quell strikes or riots.

April 7, 1964 Members reject Council's bargaining offer at a special.

April 29, 1964 Members vote to proceed to arbitration on the 1964 contract.

May 6, 1964 $25.00 is donated to the Runnymede Hospital Comfort Fund.

June 3, 1964 Bruce Murray is initiated into Local 411.

Participation in the Labour Day Parade is approved. Each man attending gets $3.00, plus one of eight chances at a $5.00 draw.

The 1965 Ball is approved for the Club Kingsway, and 5500 are tickets ordered.

Robert Burton is accepted into Local 411.

June 9-11, 1964 Four delegates attend the PFOFF Convention in Sarnia.

August 17-21, 1964 Two delegates attend the IAFF Convention in San Diego, California.

September 9, 1964 Members agree to work for Brother A. Britton.

$45.00 worth of tickets are purchased for the Rani-Ghar Grotto Show fund in aid of C.P. research.

Payments of the dance receipts to the Welfare Corporation are deferred until the cost of the arbitration is known.

Members ask for the ability to change four shifts a year.

October 7, 1964 "Christmas Trees" are approved for the Weston "San" and for members' children at the Silverthorn Legion. Participation in the Remembrance Day Parade is also approved.

Local 411 passes a motion to encourage the Metro Locals to draw up a master contract in case of amalgamation.

Constitution changes allowing for a secret ballot, and a raise in the Secretary-Treasurer's honourarium to $350.00 per year are passed.

Members request two pairs of coveralls for each station for greasing the trucks.

Contract proposals for 1965:

  • One year agreement.
  • Clothing issue to be provided by June 1st.
  • A burberry coat with zip in lining every four years.
  • Group insurance raised from $5,000.00 to $7,500.00 on a 50/50 basis.
  • Pay day once a week.
  • Parity with Toronto Fire Fighters salary.
  • Training Officer to hold the rank and assume the salary of Platoon Chief.

October 12-15, 1964 Three consultants are sent to the Labour Relations Seminar in Gravenhurst.

December 2, 1964 Members question if the Township will give legal representation to fire fighters who get into an accident while driving fire department apparatus.

"Penny Beggar Cans" for the Canadian Save the Children Fund are put in all stations.

A food hamper is sent to the Lanark Striker's Christmas Fund.

$100.00 is donated to the Toronto Fire Fighters War Veterans Association for Christmas parties in York Township Fire Halls.

$25.00 is donated to the Salvation Army.

January 6, 1965 Members pass a motion requesting that hydrant tops and caps be painted in luminous paint.

January 27, 1965 A special meeting is held to consider the offer made to the negotiating committee. The offer is accepted.

  • Duty exchanges for up to six days per year.
  • Sick day credits for fire fighters with over ten years' service to be paid out at 3/4 of their value (to a maximum of six months' payout) upon leaving the employer.
  • Normal Retirement age of 60, and an additional 1/2% payment on pension.
  • $1000.00 differential between 1st Class and Captain.
  • Deletion of residency requirement (Metropolitan Toronto).
  • More "equitable holiday" periods.
  • Reclassification of Training Officer to District Chief (with no difference in pay)

Motions to include an Acting Captain position in the contract, and to allow lieu days to be carried over to future years are defeated.

September 29, 1966 The President of Local 1209 (Weston) is appointed as a member of Local 411 until September, 1967.

Local 411 sends a telegram to Local 134, Atlanta, in support of a stand they are taking with respect to the IAFF Constitution.

Reports are given by Local 411's representative to the Metro Representative's Committee.

Local 411 is directed to consult the Chief on a discipline issue, requesting that a man reporting late on weekends and nights be allowed to stay on duty, if capable of doing so, until he appears before the chief to prevent a crew from running short.

March 23, 1967 A Special Meeting is called "to discuss the alternative view of the vote taken at the Feb 20/67 Meeting." The Executive Board recommends arbitration, which is endorsed conditionally by the members.

April 12, 1967 Approved expenditures included donations to the ANAF Baseball League and the Runnymede Hospital Comfort Fund, and a new radio for the Weston station.

December 14, 1976 Brother L. Campbell get Local 411 approval to post notices for members to sign if they wish to receive the Canadian Firefighter magazine.

Local 411 reimburses refreshment expenses for Brother Cull's funeral.

150 Shift Calendars are approved for each platoon.

$100.00 is donated to the Weston Lions Club for structural repairs to Weston Arena.

Humidifiers are approved for any stations which require them.

January 7, 1977 A special executive meeting is held at the request of a member who has received a letter from the President of the OPFFA with respect to a speech. A meeting with the member, executive, OPFFA President and IAFF 13th District Vice President is set up to deal with the issue.

January 11, 1977 John Koci and Gallan Tam are accepted into Local 411.

Money in the General Fund is divided equally among the General Fund, Legal Fund and Arbitration Fund.

Tape recorders are used for a three-month trial period at general meetings.

Members vote to defend a members' right to express his opinion, and provide the resources of the Legal Fund (subject to the Constitution).

A group grievance is filed with respect to discrimination to the platoon the acting mechanic works on.

February 10-12, 1977 Two consultants attend the Anti-Inflation Board (AIB) seminar at Humber College.

March 8, 1977 Local 411 purchases a copy of Contract Clauses.

The President (or his representative) and Lady are to be provided with tickets to any Retirees Dinner-Dance to present the appropriate plaques.

Participation on the "Festival Committee" is approved.

The President is reimbursed for the Sam McKittrick Retirement Dinner.

April 12-15, 1977 Six consultants attend the OPFFA education seminar in Niagara Falls.

May 9, 1977 Local 411 contributes to the A. Keech retirement dinner.

June 6-9, 1977 Four delegates and one alternate attend the OPFFA Convention in Sault Ste. Marie.

June 14, 1977 Election of Officers: President: J. Thompson, Vice-President: J. McVey, Secretary: R. E. Jones, Treasurer: W. B. Parker, Directors: J. Dowdell, J. Paul.

The 1976-1977 Collective Agreement is ratified.

Members vote to have written reports on seminars posted.

A committee is struck to examine the Metro Pension Plan to see if the Corporation is in violation of the Human Rights Code.

June 25, 1977 Local 411 participates in the York Festival, including a float and an entry in the bed race. Participants are provided with photographs.

July 4, 1977 Bjorn Hansen is accepted into Local 411.

September 10-13, 1977 Two delegates attend the Canadian Caucus in Calgary.

September 13, 1977 Local 411 purchases the Revised Statutes of Ontario for $65.00 plus subscriptions.

$200.00 is donated to the Metro Muscular Dystrophy Fund (along with all other Metro locals). Toll plazas are held, with proceeds going to MDAC.

Members reject motions to be provided with fatigue clothing and to eliminate the requirement to wear uniforms to and from work.

October 11, 1977 Michael Collins and Alex McCallister are accepted into Local 411.

Members approve expenses for after the funeral of Art Searle (NYFD) at the Firefighters Club.

Local 411 approaches the Fire Chief to discuss plowing the lots after a snowfall.

Members approve a motion to secure fatigue clothing, in addition to the dress uniform, for fire fighters under the rank of Captain for wear during on-duty hours.

October 24-26, 1977 Four consultants attend the OPFFA Seminar in Niagara Falls.

November 8, 1977 Bargaining proposals for 1978:
  • Add "and other terms and conditions of employment" the the "Purpose" section.
  • Change "union" to "association" wherever it appears in the agreement.
  • Promotional clause as requested in 1977.
  • Salary increase of 12.64%.
  • OMERS Type 3.
  • 0.7% pension reduction deferred to age 65.
  • Health benefits required by law and a Type I dental plan.
  • 100% payment of Group insurance.
  • Layoff/Contracting Out/Technological Change clauses.
  • Change "just cause" to "sufficient cause" in discipline clause.
  • Add "Managements Rights" clause.
  • Liability insurance (indemnification).
  • Staffing: 5 on pumpers, 6 on aerials.
  • Interest on retroactivity.
  • One year agreement.

Members vote to provide reliefs for the "Over the Hill Mob" for the MD Christmas Party.

December 13, 1977 $50.00 is donated to the caretaker at Hollis Ave. Community Hall.

January 10, 1978 Members vote to keep the 24-hour Sunday shift.

Members reject the Department's proposed Code of Ethics. The Corporation's Negotiating Committee is informed of this by letter.

February 14, 1978 Members vote to buy a 1/4 page ad in the Etobicoke Convention Book.

$1.00 per member is donated to the Testimonial Dinner and Presentation in honour of Dr. Eric G. Taylor at the OPFFA Convention.

March 13, 1978 Members vote "to ascertain the possible implications of the UI rebate refund re: Unemployment Insurance Act, Anti-Inflation Act & Income Tax Act failing satisfactory explanations, we seek legal advice in this matter."

April 18, 1978 Executive meetings are moved out of the fire halls.

A new radio is approved for Oakwood Fire Hall.

A note of thanks is sent to Frank and Ralph McKittrick and Box 13 for their efforts on our behalf at 1570 Bathurst Street on April 17, 1978.

Motions to have a washroom installed closer to the Station 2 switchboard room, and to receive lieu days as per the collective agreement are defeated by the membership.

Members pass a motion to investigate possible holiday schedules as they pertain to individual platoons.

September 26, 1978 Members narrowly pass an Executive Recommendation to accept the 1978 Terms of Settlement after a motion to reconsider is passed.

October 10-13, 1978 Four consultants attend the OPFFA seminar in Niagara Falls.

October 17, 1978 One consultant attends the Mercer seminar on "Cumulative Sick Leave: Financial Benefit or Disaster."

Members approve having an OMERS Pension presentation.

November 14, 1978 Members approve a visit by Santa to the NWGH.

A token of appreciation is given to Frank and Ralph McKittrick.

The Executive Board strongly recommends that the submissions to the Corporation for bargaining be limited to five.

Members vote on 42 issues, passing only 5:

  • Increase in vacation allotment.
  • A 13.7% salary increase.
  • The right for an arbitrator to modify any disciplinary action.
  • Corporation to provide for personal liability (indemnification).
  • Staffing: 5 on pumpers, 6 on aerials.

Members vote to approach the Chief about getting an overcoat like North York's.

A committee is established to look into the feasibility and cost of fatigue clothing.

December 10, 1978 The Vacation Committee reports to the Executive Board.

December 12, 1978 A motion passes for Local 411 to assume the cost of plowing the parking lot at #4 hall when necessary.
