September 21, 1928 First Journal entry - Election of Officers: President - Thomas F. Norman, Secretary - Harry Saunders, Treasurer - A. E. Woods

There are originally eight members with a ninth accepted at this meeting.

Members: Albert Ernest Woods, Harry Gray, Walter Edward Dollery, Leonard Charles Mead, Arthur Rollinson, W. C. Farr, Thomas Frank Norman, Harry Saunders, and Charles Albert Langford.

October 5, 1928 Robert Henry Good, Robert Todd, Joseph Doyley, F. Ealham and W. Forbes are accepted into Branch 37.

Meetings are switched to the 3rd Friday of each month.

October 24, 1928 The Charter for Branch #37, Provincial Federation of Ontario Fire Fighters is presented by PFOFF General President Richard Lyons and General Secretary D. H. Lamb.

November 20, 1928 Joseph Gartshore is accepted into Branch 37.

January 18, 1929 Elections: President - Harry Gray, 1st Vice President - Robert Todd, Secretary - Harry Saunders, Treasurer - Ernest Wood.

The secretary is empowered to appoint a representative of Branch 37 to attend any funeral of a member of the Federation at his own expense.

February 15, 1929 Charles Langford is elected 2nd Vice President.

Henry Todd is accepted into Branch 37.

(Note: This is the first mention of Brother Sam Parson. His acceptance into the Branch is not recorded in the minutes, but must be assumed)

March 11, 1929 First record of bargaining for salary (Fire Area #7-Drivers $1500, 2 weeks vacation proposed) Part-time drivers earn $5.00 a week.

May 17,1929 Art Rollinson is elected delegate to convention in St. Catharines - $10.00 expenses provided.

August 16, 1929 Officers higher than the rank of Captain are excluded from the Branch by majority vote.

December, 1929 First record of Provincial Government Lobbying - 3 members are selected to interview our local members of the Provincial Government on pension issues.

January 6, 1930 A Motion to combine the offices of Secretary and Treasurer is defeated

First Health & Safety Resolution - Request to York Township Council to pass a by-law requiring fire extinguishers at public garages (The Township passes the by-law immediately).

Election of Officers: President - Harry Gray, 1st Vice President - Charles Langford, 2nd Vice President - Sam Parson, Secretary - Harry Saunders, Treasurer - Joseph Doyley.

Officers higher in rank than captains are allowed active membership in the Branch.

First mention of a fish & chip supper paid for from the fund.

March 3, 1930 First Grievance Committee appointed with provision for reimbursement of lost salary while in the performance of their duties.

Proposal to give the oldest drivers an increase of pay up to $1600.

April 7, 1930 Branch writes to Council seeking protection of drivers of Fire Apparatus running against intersection signal lights.

Two delegates are sent to convention in London, Ontario (Expenses-$25.00 each, $50 grant from Council).

May 5, 1930 First reference to Hall Stewards.

June 2, 1930 Chief Norman is made an Honourary Member.

September 8, 1930 A motion "that the usual practice of purchasing fish & chips at our monthly meeting be discontinued until our Bank Balance is much healthier" is passed.

December 1, 1930 Election of Officers: President - Frank Norman,1st Vice President - Charles Langford, 2nd Vice President - Sam Parson, Secretary-Treasurer - Art Rollinson

Media relations: A motion to publish a report of the banquet and Election of Officers in the daily Papers is passed. (Editors comment: This is probably the first time our Association discovered that the media are not interested in reporting on the activities of a fire fighters' association. No articles were found)

February 2, 1931 Report on fundraiser held in the Fairbank Fire Hall featuring a fine array of talent ....consisting of Black Face Comedian comic singer, Scotch dancers, xylophone player, Hawaiian guitars, etc. Tickets 25 cents, children 2 for 25 cents. Proceeds to put on a paid dance at a later date.

Branch sends a letter to Council requesting a by-law on requiring notification of fumigating with cyanide gas.

March 2, 1931 Salary Parity argument first used in York - Branch asks the Fire Board to increase the rate of pay for Oakwood to the same rate as Fairbank.

June 1, 1931 Parity achieved between Oakwood & Fairbank ($1650 per year retroactive to January 1st)

Delegates attend Oshawa PFOFF Convention. York Council refuses to pay the usual $50 grant.

October 5, 1931 Association requests a copy of fireman's sickness and death benefit insurance policy. There is concern that $1500 is not enough.

A motion that paid department members donate 2% of their wages to the York Township Distress Fund for 4 months is passed.

Chief Boisclair is given an honourary membership to Branch 37.

October 20, 1931 Gavel purchased for $1.50.

December 4, 1931 Election of Officers: President - Charles Langford, 1st Vice President - Sam Parson, 2nd Vice President - Joe Gartshore, 3rd Vice President - Harry Saunders, Secretary-Treasurer - Art Rollinson.

January 4, 1932 The membership authorizes that a typewriter be procured for the Secretary at a cost not to exceed $15.00. (They couldn't find a "favourable" machine for that price at that time)

April 1932 New Chief and Deputy appointed. A 10% pay cut is rumoured.

May 4, 1932 Meetings suspended for July and August for the first time.

Ward 1 Fireman's Baseball Team receives grant of $5.00

Only one delegate is sent to the convention in Chatam. It is funded by a deal that gave the Branch 50% of donations made by the public to the Department.

Summer, 1932 York Ward 1 Firemen's Brigade wins the cup for finest company on parade in Youngstown, New York. (Editor's Note: This is probably when polishing trophies became routine punishment for firemen requiring discipline. This is before late boards...)

October 12, 1932 Branch 37 annual "Birthday Party" is cancelled for the first time due to lack of funds.

November 18, 1932 The six members of the Mount Dennis Fire Department join Branch 37: Henry Joseph Smith, William Thomas Smith, Bert Hoare, George Wright, Frederick A. Ketteringham, and Edward Oscar McNeely.

December 13, 1932 Election of Officers: President - Joe Gartshore, 1st Vice President - Sam Parson, 2nd Vice President - Joe Smith, 3rd Vice President - George Mead, Secretary-Treasurer - Art Rollinson.

Jan 12, 1933 Brief case purchase approved for secretary.

Meetings are now rotated among all fire halls: Oakwood, Fairbank, Mt. Dennis and Humbercrest.

Feb 15, 1933 Members visit a fire fighter from Fort William being treated in Weston Sanitarium, and bring $2.00 worth of fruit.

June 1933 One delegate sent to PFOFF Ottawa convention.

York's delegate leads the campaign to reopen the PFOFF Voluntary Death Benefit Fund (VDBF) rules to allow "overage" fire fighters to participate in the plan. (Five Mt. Dennis fireman are in this category, and Branch 37 tries to work out a deal for them to "buy back" eligibility).

October 5, 1933 Branch 37 investigates the possibility creating a medical service (a doctor offers this service for 25 cents per month or $3.00 per year)

December 1933 Visco Oil Works Fire - 2 people killed and inquest scheduled

Consideration is given to try to have fire fighters covered by WCB.

January 1934 Visco Oil Works fire - inquest recommends more rigid inspection of premises storing gas and oil and to give full power to fire departments to grant licenses and inspect garages and service stations

George Cowan, President of Branch 1 (Toronto) addresses the January meeting on the need for co-operation among the PFOFF Branches.

February 27, 1934 A series of wrestling bouts is suggested as a way to raise funds for the Branch.

March 1934 Lobbying continues on the VDBF issue with Branch 37 representatives going to London and Oshawa to speak to the president and secretary-treasurer of the PFOFF

Two delegates attend a funeral in London for two brothers who died in the line of duty.

April 18, 1934 A motion is passed that the dues and donations of any unemployed member be paid from the Locals fund until they are able to pay.

A letter is written to York Council advising of hazardous situation caused through traffic congestion at main intersections and asks them to have traffic lights controlled from the fire halls.

June 12, 1934 President Harry Saunders is elected as a director of the PFOFF at the convention in Ottawa.

Toronto's president addresses the meeting on the benefits of belonging to the IAFF.

A motion is passed to affiliate with the I.A.F.F. and increase dues to cover IAFF membership.

Payment of $12.00 for IAFF charter is donated by President Saunders from his expense reimbursement from the Ottawa convention.

York fire fighters attend the funeral for three Local 113 fire fighters killed at the Enarco fire, and visit injured fire fighters at St. Michael's Hospital.

August, 1934 Affiliation with the International Association of Fire Fighters. Chartered as Local 411, IAFF.
