Four girls and a dog got a little more excitement than they bargained for when a thunderstorm made the water levels in the Humber River rise suddenly. The girls, aged 12 and 13, waded out to a concrete abutment on the Dundas Street viaduct over the river.
The rescue, which took almost three hours, involved making a bridge using an aerial ladder, and roping ladders together to reach the abutment. A bulldozer was required to gouge a road to the river bank. The aerial was then shored up with boards and jacks.
